This review is from: Opteka OP-NS1 Professional Neoprene Padded Neck Strap for Digital SLR Cameras (Holds up to 15 lbs) (Camera)

I was looking for a neoprene strap because i carry my d90 around ALOT. The factory strap was hard and cut into my neck after a short while. I read alot of reviews on the other neoprene strap that said how short they were. This seems to be every bit as long as my nikon strap but is way more comfortable. I will soon be ordering one for all my dslr cameras.

This review is from: Opteka OP-NS1 Professional Neoprene Padded Neck Strap for Digital SLR Cameras (Holds up to 15 lbs) (Camera)

For me, the main benefit of a neoprene strap like the Tamrac N25 is that it stretches and cushions the weight of the camera, instead of directly transmitting it to my neck. The camera has a little bounce, instead of the drag of pure dead weight. In an apparent moment of madness, I found the design of this odd looking Opteka strap interesting, and decided to check it out. This turned out to be an unfortunate mistake.

I tested this strap primarily with a heavier rig, consisting of a Canon 7D with battery grip, and 70-200mm lens. The kind of bounce I was used to, is completely missing with the Opteka strap. The neoprene is quite thick, about 1/4 inch, and there is a strip of nylon sewn along the length of the strap, that reinforces and prevents the neoprene from stretching very much, hence the lack of bounciness. Stiffening up the strap, takes away much of the utility and comfort of using an oversized strap like this.

The widest part of the strap is 2.5 inches, and goes right over the neck. When the strap rests on your bare neck, it is not very comfortable at all. It is heavy, and the sharp corners bite into the neck. Also, because it is so wide and heavy, it makes leaning your head back rather difficult. With my head forced out of position, by the end of a two hour shoot, my neck was both sore and a little chaffed. It took several days for the pain to subside. This very uncomfortable strap pulls your neck down, and is an absolute disaster.

I am kicking myself because I really should have known better. Other Opteka products I have purchased, have also been design disasters. I didn’t expect that they would mess up a simple thing like a camera strap, but Opteka is a truly incompetent company. Neither of the two features that I expected to be positives, the neoprene construction, and the ergonomic shape, turned out to be worth a damn.

Another mistake was buying from 47th Street Photo. They have a restocking fee, and require the customer to pay for return postage, which means I would get back $3 for a $10 item. It’s not worth the trouble to return, but hopefully others can learn from my stupidity, and buy from Amazon whenever possible, instead of an affiliated vendor. I took a major hit dealing with 47th Street Photo, when I returned an Opteka product in the past. Thankfully Amazon is not as mercenary.

I have this type of strap on all my cameras after suffering headaches with other non-elastic straps. My photo team use them, I show my friends how more comfortable they are and sturdy. They like them and at good price too.
